Canyon de Colca 06.03.06 - 08.03.06

We booked a 3day/2nights trek to the Colca Valley (2nd deepest Canyon in the world, though this is disputed). We took the bus from Arequipe to Cabanaconde. After Lunch we set of down into the valley. Here we cross over the Colca River. Then we climb the other side to get to the villiges we went to stay for the night. Itīs a hard climb up to Cosnirhua, as its very steep right at the end. Cosnirhua is a litte village typical of the valley. There are no roads or electricity in the valley. It was very quiet and peaceful. The next day we went along the valley and back across the Colca river to Sangalle or the Oasis with its pools. Here we have lunch and a swimm. A welcome break before the climb back up to Cabanaconde. For this Monika gehts a mule and halfway up I wish I did the same. We spend the night in Cabanaconde. Early the next morning we went to the Cruz del Condor. We saw about 15 Condors coming up through the valley on thermals. One flew about 2 meters over our heads. It is a very impressive bird. Next stop Chivay with its thermal baths and from there back to Areqipe. All in all a very enjoyable trip. I would definitly recommend doing it if your in the area.
