El Calafate  13.01.06 - 15.01.06
back to home
Parque National Los Glacieres
We arrived in El Calafate late afternoon the 13.01.06 after our longest and most uncomfertable bus trip yet. The town itself was very touristy. It was the first time we had encountered busloads of package tourism from all ends of the world. The prices where accordingly high.
14.01.06 Trip to the Perito Moreno Glacier
The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the few advancing Glaciers left in the world. It advances at a pace of Approx. 2m a day in the midsection (Thats about 7ft for you non-metrics out there).
That ice breaks off into the Lake. The crashing noise of even the smallest pieces is amazing. It sound a bit like a gunrange.  We took a boat ride along the northern side of the glacier to get up close an personal. You canīt walk up to it as over the past 3 decades 36 people got crushed by falling ice.
The Rockformation in the middle of the Glacier on the top picture is about 14km (approx. 9miles)  away.
